Caernarfon - Ancient Town & Castle

CastleAncient Town

Caernarfon Castle and its walled town is a world heritage site, and deservedly so. This is much more than a ruin - it is a well-preserved building which mixes defensive stronghold with a royal palace, inspired by the walls of Constantinople with bands of decorative masonry, making a statement of dominance by a powerful king. Its site at a river mouth and on the Menai Straits has ensured its importance well past the medieval period of regional warfare.

Beaumaris, Anglesey - Town & Castle

CastleAncient TownSea

Beaumaris was created by the conquering English King Edward 1 when he moved to tighten his grip on North Wales by building a string of impenetrable fortresses at key strategic sites. The last of these was Beaumaris. Seven centuries later, in more peaceful times, we have a perfect castle, set in its moat, dominating its attractive town of well-preserved houses, hotels and shops.

Mountains

Mount Snowdon dominates the National Park to which it gives the name. For centuries, it has challenged walkers and climbers, but 100 years ago, a railway reached the summit so that you can take the easy or the hard route up the slopes. From the summit, you can see Wales spread out before you. Around the mountain, are a series of beautiful landscapes and historic villages, each with a story to tell.

Menai Bridge

BridgeSea

Menai Bridge Is a small town on the Anglesy shore where the ancient ferries crossed to the mainland. But as the name suggests, it is famous for the spectacular suspension bridge built by Thomas Telford, "The Colossus of Roads" who in 1826 successfully spanned the Straits below with his engineering masterpiece.

Snowdonia National Park includes 823 square miles (2132 square Km) of North West Wales, including Mount Snowdon itself, and the mountainous region around it. As well as striking mountain scenery, it is a treasure trove of history, from early warrior Princes through resolute farming stalwarts to early industrial entrepreneurs who plundered the rich resources of the region to roof the world with slate. It is also the home of rare animals, birds, flowers and trees, and host of stories to be discovered.

Amazing Day Tour in Northern Wales. The four of us were picked up at our B&B in Llandudno to see the sights. Our guide was very knowledgeable and humorous, and an excellent driver on the challenging roads of the region. The tour was customized on the go as he learned more about what we were interested in.
