Wrexham Football Club: A Modern Renaissance

Wrexham AFC, established in 1864, is the oldest football club in Wales and the third oldest in the world. The club has seen a resurgence in recent years, thanks largely to the high-profile ownership of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

In November 2020, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham AFC, promising to use their fame to grow the club and bring back success. Their ownership has raised the club's profile a great deal, helped by the documentary series "Welcome to Wrexham", which follows the owners and the club.

Under their ownership, Wrexham has been revived. The club won promotion back to the English Football League (EFL) after 15 years away and is playing in League One for the 2024/25 season, its first time at this level in nearly two decades. That shows what Reynolds and McElhenney's investment has achieved.

The club has been busy in the transfer market, strengthening the squad for League One. New signings include Arthur Okonkwo from Arsenal and Lewis Brunt from Leicester City, both expected to add depth and quality.

There's been progress off the pitch too, although plans to redevelop the Kop stand at the Racecourse Ground have been delayed by issues with the local council. The owners are still committed to improving the stadium.

The World's Oldest International Football Stadium

Wrexham AFC plays its home games at the Racecourse Ground, the world's oldest international football stadium still in use. It holds around 10,500 people, and the planned redevelopment will make it bigger, with better facilities for a growing number of fans.

Since its founding in 1864 the club has had its share of memorable FA Cup runs and league campaigns, and it has loyal fans and close ties to the local community in North Wales. The recent success carries on that history, and the club hopes to go higher still in the coming years.

With Reynolds and McElhenney involved, the club has a new level of ambition and a clear plan on and off the pitch. It has a real chance of getting back among the bigger names in English football.

If you're visiting North Wales, we'd recommend a trip to the Racecourse Ground to watch Wrexham play. The atmosphere at a historic club on the way up is something else, and there's the rest of North Wales to explore while you're here.
