Portmeirion
Portmeirion

One popular destination when touring South Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula is Portmeirion.

Portmeirion is a tourist village influenced by a mixture of the Italian Riviera and Wales. It is located in Penrhyndeudraeth, two miles from the town of Porthmadog. It was the long-term personal project of architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. The building went on in phases between 1925 and 1975 and is now owned by a charitable trust. The village is fairly small, but William-Ellis’ clever use of arches, slopes and window sizes makes it seem larger than it is.

The village is well known for being the location for many films and television shows, including the cult series The Prisoner in the 1960s. More recently, it is the setting for Festival No. 6. The festival runs annually since 2012 and famous performers that have headlined at this festival include Pet Shop Boys, London Grammar, Years & Years, Bastille and Super Furry Animals.

It has been described as “a gorgeous visual poem” by The Rough Guide to Wales. This is a great location to visit, particularly if you are interested in architecture and photography.
