# FAQs | CELTICOS

Planning, booking and what to expect on the day

The questions we're asked most. If yours isn't here, please get in touch.

## Planning and booking

How do we book a tour?

Send us a few lines through the enquiry form at the foot of any page: who's coming, roughly when, and what you'd like to see. We'll reply by email, plan the trip with you, and send a quotation once the plan has settled. A deposit secures your dates. [How it works](https://www.celticos.com/how-it-works) has the whole process, and our [terms and conditions](https://www.celticos.com/terms-and-conditions) cover payment.

Do you operate all year?

Yes, apart from our own holidays and days such as Christmas Day.

How many days do we need?

For the whole of Wales, at least five to seven. Wales is small but slow to cross, especially from north to south. With fewer days, a [North Wales multi-day tour](https://www.celticos.com/tours/north-wales-multi-day-tours) makes the most of them; with more, see our [All-Wales tours](https://www.celticos.com/tours/all-wales-multi-day-tours).

What accommodation should we book?

Whatever suits you, from a country house hotel to a farmhouse B&B or a cottage. Tell us the standard you're looking for and we'll suggest places that fit the route. In North Wales we recommend one central base, so you aren't packing and unpacking every night. Our [accommodation advice](https://www.celticos.com/information/accommodation-advice-north-wales) lists places our guests have stayed.

Can we join a tour with other people?

No. Every tour is private, just for you and the people you're travelling with.

How much luggage can we bring?

You'll travel in a Mercedes V-Class with 1,410 litres of luggage space. As a guide, a party of six fits comfortably with one medium suitcase each, plus hand luggage. Tell us what you're bringing and we'll make sure it fits.

How many of us can come?

Up to 7 guests, travelling together in our Mercedes V-Class. Seven can be tight, so we usually recommend no more than 6. For a party of 8 or more, get in touch and we will make special arrangements.

How far ahead should we get in touch?

Whenever suits you. Some guests write eight months ahead, some a few weeks before. It's best to confirm availability as soon as possible.

Can children come?

Children are welcome. Not every tour suits every age, so tell us their ages when you get in touch and we will plan the day around them. We are not able to accommodate infants and babies.

## Getting to Wales

Which airport should we fly into?

For North Wales, Manchester is the closest major airport, with direct trains to the North Wales coast. London Heathrow has the most long-haul flights, and Liverpool and Birmingham are other options. For South Wales, Cardiff has its own airport, with fewer routes. We can also [collect you](https://www.celticos.com/tours/transfers) from an airport, port or station.

How do we get from London to North Wales?

By train from London Euston: Avanti West Coast runs direct to Llandudno Junction and Bangor in about three hours, via Chester. From Heathrow, take the Elizabeth line or the Heathrow Express into central London, then a short Tube or taxi ride to Euston.

Can we take the train from Manchester Airport?

Yes. Transport for Wales runs direct trains from Manchester Airport along the North Wales coast. From Birmingham Airport there are trains too, though you may need to change.

Can we come by ferry from Ireland?

Yes. [Stena Line](https://www.stenaline.co.uk) and [Irish Ferries](https://www.irishferries.com/uk-en/routes-and-times/dublin-holyhead/) sail from Dublin to Holyhead on Anglesey, and many overseas visitors fly into Dublin and come this way. We're happy to meet you at Holyhead.

What about South Wales?

Trains run from London Paddington to Cardiff, the capital and largest city, which has direct trains to many other UK cities. There's a direct train from Cardiff to Bangor, too: about four and a half hours, slow but scenic.

Any tips for the trains?

Book tickets in advance and reserve seats on long-distance trains, especially at busy times. Keep your ticket or e-ticket handy for the barriers at larger stations, and the card you paid with if you need to collect tickets from a machine. Chester, Llandudno Junction and Bangor have lifts to the platforms for luggage. Timetables: [Avanti West Coast](https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk/) and [Transport for Wales](https://tfw.wales/).

## On the day

Where do you pick us up?

Wherever suits you: your accommodation, a railway station or anywhere else in North Wales. We can collect from further afield, which may add to the cost.

What if the weather is bad?

We may change the route to keep you safe and comfortable, but we have never had to cancel a tour because of the weather.

What time do we start and finish?

Usually around 9am to 5pm, but we are flexible. What matters most is that you have a good time, so if starting earlier or finishing later makes for a better day, that is what we will do.

Are admission fees included?

No. Entry to castles, gardens and other attractions is paid on the day, where a fee applies. Most of the castles are maintained by Cadw, part of the Welsh Government. Please visit [cadw.gov.wales](https://cadw.gov.wales). We can advise you on the best deals when you book your tour with us.

Is food included?

No. As we tour we will suggest eating places that our guests have enjoyed.

What should we wear and bring?

Sensible footwear for some light walking, and a rain jacket, just in case.

How much walking is involved?

Some, and none of it strenuous: the walk from the car to a castle gate or a viewpoint. If walking is a concern, tell us and we will plan the stops accordingly.

## Cruises, transfers and the rest of the UK

Do you meet cruise ships at Holyhead?

Yes, subject to availability. Get in touch well ahead, as cruise calls are often in the peak season. Your time ashore sets how far we can go: choose one of our [shore excursions](https://www.celticos.com/tours/excursions) or we'll plan one around your ship.

Can we take a day tour of Snowdonia from Cardiff?

No. We're based in Snowdonia, four and a half hours' drive from Cardiff. An [All-Wales tour](https://www.celticos.com/tours/all-wales-multi-day-tours) can take in both.

Do you only tour Wales?

We tour Wales, but a multi-day tour can include places in England, and we can collect you from, or take you on to, anywhere in the UK. See our [private transfers](https://www.celticos.com/tours/transfers).
