The Contrasting Valleys Trail
Introduction
The day involves visiting three main venues with a few brief extra stops at places of interest during the Contrasting Valleys Trail as this ‘walk & ride ’ located in the southern area of Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula.
• Cwm Pennant
• Nant Gwrtheyrn
• Trefor Owen Clogs
"Why God, did you make Cwm Pennant so beautiful, And the life of an old shepherd so short?"
The Bard Eifion Wyn, writing about Cwm Pennant in his poem of the same name, called it 'the most beautiful of all valleys in Wales'. The source of the River Dwyfor is at the far end of this famous valley. Apart from checking this statement out for yourselves this walk presents an excellent opportunity to experience what Celticos are offering with the porfolio of themed walks that have been created for your enjoyment.
This walk combines panoramic scenery, introduction to culture and history, an introduction to the slate and hill farming industry etc. It is a truly remarkable and wonderful place. Kyffyn Williams and Edwin Nash both used the 'Old School House' as subjects in contrasting ways.
Last but not least this walk also gives you the opportunity to visit a spectacular project of establishing a new broadleaved woodland in the Pennant Valley. The woodland when fully established will give a good idea of what the valley was like 800 years ago before industrialisation as well as having a very positive effect in reducing global C02 concentrations. The new woodland has already provided the inspiration and backdrop for a trilogy of fictional books set in the future which use animal characters to explore conservation and wildlife issues associated with this major change.
Nant Gwrtheyrn
The fascinating location of Nant Gwrtheyrn is literally our next port of call; apart from the spectacular rugged scenery this village has a unique heritage and the facilities provided give an excellent interpretation of the centre.
People have inhabited Nant Gwrtheyrn for millennia. Through periods of agriculture, quarrying, and mining, the land has sustained life and provided an income for its inhabitants. The isolated location of The Nant meant that life was sometimes a struggle for the families who lived there.

On route to Nant Gwrtheyrn we will be passing a major historical site of Tre'r Ceiri
Visiting this historical site with panoramic views is not possible as part of this ‘walk & ride’ tour as it is not an easy walk ascending to the hill fort. Celticos can arrange visits for interested parties which involves a day visiting the fort and Nant Gwrtheyrn. Please contact us for details.
