The Mushroom & Fungi day (Ref. FOR 02)
Introduction
Saturday 22nd Sept 2012
Are you aware that Snowdonia mountain range is home to some of the most diverse and interesting fungi and mushrooms in the UK including some of the very best quality edible varieties? The climate and terrain is ideal for seeking out Chanterelle, Ceps, Hedgehog Fungus Parasol Mushrooms and many others, also some of the most deadly poisonous ones such as the Death Cap. Other interesting varieties include the rare Meadow Waxcaps, beautifully coloured Russulas, intriguing Stinkhorns, the extremely hallucinogenic Fly Agaric and Psilocybin (the original ‘Magic Mushroom’). While not edible these fungi are fascinating and well worth identifying, sometimes as a precaution!! The venue for the day is the beautiful Aberglaslyn Pass which is near Beddgelert in the heart of Snowdonia where you will have the opportunity to meet Cynan Jones who is a leading expert in fungal foraging. The day provides an excellent opportunity for you to spend time with Cynan on his local patch and benefit from his years of experience and knowledge.

The foraging walk will end at the top of the Glaslyn Valley but the day continues as we visit ‘Yr Ardd Fadarch –The Mushroom Garden
This is one of Wales’s most interesting businesses, a supplier of mushrooms to some of the best restaurants and hotels in Wales and much further afield. Every week up to 80kg of fresh organic gourmet mushrooms are produced mainly Shiitake, Oyster Mushrooms (both grey and yellow) and Chestnut Mushrooms. You will have the opportunity to see how Cynan has refined the interesting process of cultivating the exotic mushrooms for harvesting throughout the year. Drying and pickling techniques will also be explained and also how the growing compost is put to good use at the end of the production.
